Centerville CrossFit Friday Night Lights
FAQ
“Don’t just stand by and watch it happen.”
Coach Eric Taylor
Ok, wrong Friday Night Lights… but we couldn’t resist a good Coach Taylor quote!
What is the Open?
The Open is comprised of five workouts over five weeks, and it starts with 20.1. Open workouts are identified by their year and the order in which they appear.
While the purpose of the Open is to find the fittest athletes in each region to move on to the regionals, it’s also an opportunity for any athlete at any level to participate in the competition. It can add meaning and purpose to your training while also bringing your gym’s community closer together. (As a rule of thumb, the Open is the time of year where we see many people achieve important firsts: bodyweight snatch, muscle-ups, toes-to-bars, handstand push-ups, double-unders, etc.)
Most importantly, the Open will also give you some interesting data on your performance in the gym, which can be a guide for setting realistic goals for the following year. [source]
What is Friday Night Lights?
Friday Night Lights, or FNL, takes place every Friday night during the 5-week long Open when we get together as the CCF Community to participate and cheer on each other as we attempt the Open workouts.
When are the Open Workouts announced?
The CrossFit Games will announce this super-secret workout at 8 PM each Thursday night during the 5 weeks of the Open (starting October 10th).
You can watch the live announcement of the workout that will be streamed on the CrossFit Games website.
How do I sign-up?
We will be releasing a sign-up sheet in our newsletter the Sunday before each Friday Night Lights (first sign up released October 6th).
Add your name if you are 100% certain you’ll be attending! The Coaching staff will take this list and create heats and lanes for you on Friday! We do not know how long the workout will take so please keep your Friday schedule open for the next 5 weeks!
How Will Regular Friday Classes be Run During the Open?
Friday classes will be running normally however, 4:30 PM will be our last class offered so we can set up for the event! Expect classes to be smaller these next 5 weeks.
Do I need to register at games.CrossFit.com?
You DO NOT need to sign up at games.CrossFit.com to attend our Friday Night Lights!
The Open is an annual event the entire world competes in and is a great way to test your current fitness level and ability! If you do decide to sign up officially on games.CrossFit.com you’ll be asked to pay a $20 fee. After each workout, you’ll add your score to the leaderboard on their site and be ranked with the thousands of others signed up!
If I officially registered for the CrossFit Games, can I do my Open Workout during a normal class?
If you have signed up through the CrossFit Games website you will need a judge which will ONLY be available during the Friday Night Lights event! Please avoid doing this during classes because it disrupts the others in class.
What do I need to know about Heats and Lanes?
Every Friday morning, Mitch will assign heats and lanes to each participant that has signed up through our “Open Sign-Up” link.
Heats are our way of organizing all of our athletes for a specific FNL at a designated time. Heats are a grouping of people who have signed up for a particular time. The size of each heat will vary from week-to-week as the workouts may require more space per athlete.
- Hypothetically, an FNL evening could look like this (this is just an example, not what it will actually be)
- Heat 1: 5 PM
- Heat 2: 5:25 PM
- Heat 3: 5:50
Lanes are a designated area depending on RX or Scaled. Once the heats have been announced each athlete will be able to find their name in the posted chart with their heat number and lane number.
📅Please be sure to be at the gym and warmed up before your heat starts!
*If you miss your heat you will automatically be added to the last heat of the evening. You will also have the opportunity to remake the workout each following Monday afternoon.
Tips for a successful Open
- Attend Friday Night Lights every week!
- We have athletes of every skill level attend FNL, so don’t be intimidated if you are planning to not RX the workout! So come out. Workout! Have fun!
- Get in there! Compete, cheer, judge, yell for your fellow CCF members!
- Again, have fun! It’s easy to get caught up in the competition of the Open, but ask anyone who has participated before, the best part of the Open is having fun with the community!
